2 min read

Villa College, one of the leading institutes of higher education in the Maldives has embarked on a significant research project in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and member countries from the South Asian region. Titled 'A Multimodal Approach to Teacher Professional Development to Address Evolving Educational Changes in Low Resource Settings', this project was inaugurated on 1st November 2021 in a ceremony held at the Villa College hall. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan as the chief guest. In the minister's remarks, he congratulated the college management and the IDRC research team led by the Faculty of Educational Studies for initiating a journey that will benefit the education sector as a whole. He also expressed his excitement on an educational institute of the Maldives leading this project in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences' (TISS) of India and the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA).This project funded by IDRC is planned to be conducted in Afghanistan, Maldives, and Nepal as there is an urgent need to address the gaps in the professional development of teacher educators and teachers, particularly in response to the requirements of the evolving educational reforms. Additionally, the project also aims to address issues of gender equality, equity, and inclusivity, since gender disparity is an issue each country faces due to geographic, cultural, and other vulnerabilities. The project's Principal Investigator and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Educational Studies at Villa College, Fathimath Saeed stated that this research will be of great benefit to learn about knowledge generation, knowledge mobilization, and capacity strengthening in the education sectors of the partner countries relating to teacher professional development. This project will hopefully help in understanding and addressing a broad spectrum of concerns in teacher professional development in the South Asian region and pave the way to enhance the competency of teacher educators through the integration of digital teaching and learning, action research, design thinking, mentoring and leadership.
